The most popular home remedies for killing fleas in and around the home are by using boric acid, DE (not pool DE) or vinegar.
Home remedies for killing fleas with garlic
Garlic is the number one choice if your dog is covered with fleas. Fleas have an aversion to garlic and if they bite your dog they will ingest some of the garlic through the dog’s blood and die. Garlic should only be used in small doses in your dog’s food and only for a short amount of time. Once you have killed most of the fleas, you should switch to a less toxic home remedy.
Home remedies for killing fleas with brewers yeast
Brewers Yeast is also a popular remedy for fleas. Brewers yeast can be found in all pet food stores as well as feed stores and some grocery stores. Put a small amount in your dog’s food at dinner time. Make sure they have plenty of water.
Home remedies for killing fleas with vinegar
For use on your dog, put a small amount of cider apple vinegar in your dog’s water bowl. It may take your dog a couple of days to get used to the vinegar.
For use in and around the home, mix equal parts vinegar with water and spray where needed.

Boric acid - and the laundry detergent Borax works great - is the best way to getting rid of fleas. Give your pet a garlic and brewer's yeast tablet a day, treat your rugs with Borax, give them a bath and get flea medicine that goes on the back of the neck. Fleas be gone!
