Home Remedies for an Earache

Personally I feel like there is nothing worse than an earache. Not only does it hurt but it can be difficult to go on throughout your day with the pain in your ear. These home remedies for an ear ache will help get you back on track and offer you some relief.

Home Remedy for an Earache - Peroxide

This is a home remedy for an earache that I swear by since I have been prone to ear aches since I was a child. Tip your head so that one ear is touching your shoulder. The ear with the earache should be up. Take a cap full of peroxide and pour it into your ear allowing it to bubble for several seconds. This will help to bubble out the infection. You can repeat this several times during the day to get relief.

Home Remedies for an Earache – Onion Juice

Take 3-4 drops of warm onion juice and drop it into the ear. This will offer relief from the earache and can be repeated several times per day.

Home Remedy for an Earache – Heating Pad

A good way to get the infection out of your ear that is causing the earache is to lay your ear on a warm heating pad. Make sure to place a wash cloth or towel between your ear and the heating pad. This will help keep from burning your ear and getting infection on the pad. DO NOT fall asleep laying on the pad.

* If you don’t have a heating pad you can wet a wash cloth and microwave it until it is warm. The place it in a ziplock bag and use it as you would a heating pad.

If you are prone to getting an earache from swimmer's ear, put a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water in the ear after swimming to dry up the excess water.

My doctor told me putting heat on an earache was the worst thing to do. I put a towel in the microwave and put it on my ear when I had one and he said the heat makes the pain worse, which I can attest to as I nearly went to the emergency room from the pain after putting the towel on. I can only imagine the pain a child might feel in the same situation.

It has something to do with the skin in the ear canal and how thin it is and the heat causing increased blood flow to the area so it's more painful.
